By Orthomed Integrative Health Center – Northborough, MA

Sciatica is one of the most painful and frustrating conditions adults face — especially after age 40. It can come on suddenly or build slowly over time. Most people describe it as:

Sharp shooting pain down the leg

Burning or tingling into the glutes or hamstring

Pain that worsens with sitting

Numbness or weakness

A feeling like the leg “might give out”

The good news? Sciatica is extremely treatable — especially when you address the actual root cause, not just the symptoms.

What Exactly Is Sciatica?

Sciatica isn’t the injury itself. It’s the result of something irritating or compressing the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your glutes and down each leg.

When that nerve gets trapped, inflamed, or compressed — you feel it fast.

The most common causes include:

1. Herniated or Bulging Discs

After age 40, the discs in your spine naturally lose some hydration and height. That makes them more likely to bulge outward and irritate the nearby nerve roots that feed into the sciatic nerve.

Typical symptoms:

Pain bending forward

Pain that worsens when you cough or sneeze

Sharp nerve pain into the buttock or leg on one side

3. Spinal Misalignment or Joint Restriction

If the joints in your lower back and pelvis aren’t moving correctly, the surrounding tissues can place extra pressure on the sciatic nerve.

You might notice:

Stiffness in the low back

Pain with twisting or bending

Pain that radiates down only one leg

Gentle, precise adjustments often relieve this pressure quickly.

4. Arthritis and Degeneration

Arthritis and age-related changes in the spine (degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis) can narrow the spaces where the nerves exit the spine. When those spaces become too tight, the sciatic nerve gets irritated.

This is especially common after 50 and may show up as:

Back and leg pain with walking

Relief when you sit or lean forward

General stiffness and achiness in the low back

5. Inflammation & Metabolic Factors

Adults over 40 are more likely to deal with:

Higher systemic inflammation

Hormonal shifts

Blood sugar issues

Slower tissue healing

All of these can make sciatica flare more easily and last longer if you don’t address the underlying health picture, not just the nerve.

Why Sciatica Gets Worse In Middle Age

As we age, a few key things change:

Discs lose hydration, so they don’t cushion as well

Muscles tighten faster and recover more slowly

Years of sitting affect posture and core strength

Inflammation increases, especially with stress and poor sleep

All of this makes adults 40+ the most common group to experience severe or recurring sciatica.

How We Treat Sciatica at Orthomed Integrative Health Center

Our integrated approach works especially well for sciatic nerve pain because it targets:

Alignment

Muscle tension

Nerve inflammation

Core stability

Underlying metabolic factors

Here’s how each piece fits together.

Clinical Massage Therapy & Myofascial Release

Our massage therapists use targeted, clinical techniques to release:

Piriformis and deep glute muscles

Tight low-back muscles

Hamstrings and hip rotators

This reduces pressure around the sciatic nerve and restores healthier movement patterns.
This is not spa massage — it’s focused soft-tissue work designed for injury and pain.

Chiropractic Adjustments (Lumbar + Pelvis)

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper movement in the joints of your lower back and pelvis.

Benefits include:

Decompressing irritated nerve roots

Improving spinal alignment

Reducing muscle spasm and guarding

Improving posture and overall mechanics

Many patients feel lighter and more mobile immediately after treatment.

Cupping Therapy for Sciatic Nerve Decompression

Cupping creates gentle suction that lifts and decompresses tight, adhered tissues. For some sciatica cases — especially piriformis-related — this can:

Improve circulation

Decrease pressure on the nerve

Reduce deep, stubborn muscle tightness

It’s a powerful add-on for chronic or long-standing sciatic pain.

Functional Medicine for Inflammation Control

Because inflammation is a major driver of pain, we also look at your internal health picture. Functional medicine may include:

Nutrition and anti-inflammatory food strategies

Targeted supplementation

Hormone and stress evaluation

Support for sleep and recovery

When your body is less inflamed, nerves and muscles heal more quickly — and pain reduces faster.

When to Seek Help Immediately

You should schedule an evaluation right away if you notice:

Experiencing shoulder pain after age 40? Learn the most common causes—rotator cuff issues, impingement, frozen shoulder—and how chiropractic, medical massage, and functional medicine at Orthomed Integrative Health Center in Northborough, MA can relieve pain fast.

By Maryann Reid- Orthomed Integrative Health Center

Shoulder pain is one of the most common issues adults over 40 experience — and it often shows up suddenly, without an obvious injury. Maybe it hurts when you reach overhead, or you notice stiffness that wasn’t there before. Many patients describe it as “I just woke up one day and my shoulder stopped working.”

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Shoulder pain increases dramatically with age — but the good news is, with the right combination of treatment, most people recover faster than they expect.

Why Shoulder Pain Increases After Age 40

As we age, the tissues around the shoulder joint naturally become more vulnerable to irritation, inflammation, and wear-and-tear. Here are the major contributors:

1. Rotator Cuff Degeneration

The rotator cuff tendons help lift and stabilize your arm.
After 40, these tendons naturally weaken due to:

Repetitive use

Age-related changes in collagen

Microtears that build over time

This leads to classic symptoms like pain with reaching, lifting, or sleeping on the affected side.

2. Impingement Syndrome

The space in the shoulder joint narrows with age. When tendons get pinched under the acromion, it causes:

Sharp pain lifting the arm

Clicking or catching

Weakness

Painful arc (pain between 60°–120° of elevation)

Impingement is one of the top causes of shoulder pain in adults 40+.

3. Postural Changes

Years of:

Desk work

Driving

Phone/tablet use

…add up. Rounded shoulders and forward head posture place extra strain on the shoulder complex and rotator cuff.
This makes the shoulder feel tight, weak, and easily irritated.

4. Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)

Much more common in people 40–65, frozen shoulder happens when the joint capsule becomes stiff and inflamed.
Symptoms include:

Severe stiffness

Limited range of motion

Deep aching pain

Difficulty sleeping

It often develops gradually — and often without a clear injury.

5. Arthritis and Wear-and-Tear

Shoulder joints naturally develop mild arthritis over time.
While not always painful, it can contribute to:

Grinding or cracking

Morning stiffness

Loss of smooth, easy movement

Arthritis often combines with rotator cuff irritation to make shoulder pain worse.

Common Symptoms of Age-Related Shoulder Pain

You may notice:

Pain lifting the arm

Stiffness reaching overhead

Pain sleeping on one side

Weakness carrying bags

Clicking or grinding

Pain radiating down the arm

Trouble reaching behind the back

If shoulder pain lasts longer than 1–2 weeks, it’s time for evaluation — earlier treatment prevents long-term issues.

By Orthomed Integrative Health Center – Northborough MA

Even a “small” car accident can have a big impact on your neck. Many people feel okay at first, only to wake up the next morning barely able to turn their head. This delayed pain is extremely common — especially in adults over 40 — and can worsen if not treated properly.

In this article, we’ll break down why whiplash symptoms linger, what’s happening inside your neck, and the most effective ways to recover safely.

What Exactly Is Whiplash?

Whiplash happens when your neck snaps forward and backward rapidly — usually during a rear-end collision. This motion overstretches muscles, ligaments, and joint capsules that support your cervical spine.

Even at low speeds (5–10 mph), the force is enough to cause:

Sharp neck pain or stiffness

Headaches behind the eyes

Shoulder pain

Limited range of motion

Tingling down the arms

Muscle spasms

Fatigue or difficulty concentrating

Middle-aged adults tend to experience more severe inflammation and slower soft-tissue healing, which is why targeted care is essential.

Why Neck Pain Often Gets Worse 24–72 Hours After a Crash

You may walk away from the accident thinking you’re fine — then the pain hits later. This delay happens because:

1. Inflammation takes time to build

The soft tissues swell gradually over hours. Once swelling peaks, stiffness and pain increase.

2. Protective muscle guarding kicks in

Your neck muscles tighten to protect damaged areas, often causing spasms and restricted movement.

3. Hidden soft-tissue injuries surface

Microscopic tears in muscle and fascia aren’t noticeable immediately but become painful once they inflame.

4. Adrenaline masks symptoms

Right after the accident, your nervous system is in “emergency mode.” Once adrenaline fades, pain surfaces.

Why Ignoring Whiplash Can Be Dangerous

Untreated whiplash can lead to:

Chronic neck and shoulder pain

Degenerative disc problems

Long-term headaches

Poor posture

Reduced athletic ability

Sleep disruption

Nerve irritation

These issues are much harder to fix months later, especially in patients 40+ whose tissues naturally heal slower.

The Most Effective Treatments for Post-Accident Neck Pain

At OrthoMed Massage Clinic, we specialize in integrated injury recovery — combining chiropractic, medical massage therapy, and functional medicine for faster healing.

Here’s what works best:

1. Chiropractic Adjustments to Restore Neck Mobility

Car accidents commonly cause joint misalignment in the cervical spine. Chiropractic Care helps:

Reduce inflammation

Improve range of motion

Relieve nerve pressure

Correct postural changes caused by the crash

Gentle cervical adjustments (no aggressive twisting) are especially effective for whiplash.

2. Medical Massage Therapy to Heal Damaged Muscles

Our therapists use targeted techniques such as:

Myofascial release

Trigger point therapy

Neuromuscular therapy

Myofascial cupping (excellent for shoulder tension)

These help break up adhesions, reduce spasms, and restore blood flow so tissues heal correctly.

Medical Massage pairs extremely well with chiropractic care — one restores alignment, the other restores soft-tissue function.

3. Functional Medicine to Reduce Systemic Inflammation

After an accident, inflammation isn’t only local — it can affect your entire body.

Functional medicine strategies may include:

Anti-inflammatory nutritional protocols

Supplements that support tissue repair

Identifying underlying metabolic issues that delay healing

Stress-hormone balancing after trauma

This holistic approach helps middle-aged adults recover faster and more completely.

4. Home Care That Makes a Major Difference

We also teach patients how to manage symptoms between visits.
Our most effective home strategies include:

Gentle mobility exercises

Cold therapy for acute inflammation

Heat therapy for muscle tension

Proper ergonomic setup at work

Sleep-position correction

These small adjustments dramatically improve outcomes.

How Long Does Whiplash Recovery Take?

Every patient is different, but most people begin experiencing relief within 1–3 sessions when treated promptly.

Without treatment, symptoms can persist for months or even years.

If Your Neck Still Hurts After a Car Accident — We Can Help

You don’t have to live with lingering pain or stiffness.

Schedule an Auto-Injury Evaluation at Orthomed Integrative Health Center (Northborough, MA)

In New England, we all used to the throes of winter’s cold weather. Many of us have begun our winter training, and others of us settle in for the winter. But many of our patients often ask us, Why do my aches and pain increase in the cold? Whether you have chronic condition or long standing orthopedic problem, weather often magnifies your discomfort. In absence of absolute scientific proof, several discussions upon research provide proposed explanations for this cause, from barometric pressure, to decrease in blood flow to joints and elasticity of muscles and tendons, and even seasonal affective disorder may influence your perception of pain.

Decreased activity in the winter months contributes as well to increased risk for stiffness and joint pain.

It is absolutely true, that when it’s cold outside, it is more difficult for blood to circulate to our extremities, which can result in our pain receptors often times becoming more sensitive. Often times our conditions may not entirely be exacerbated but our nervous system may perceive the discomfort more intensely.

What can you do?

Fight the urge to hibernate and move more in the winter months

Get regular massage therapy to stimulate the nervous system to reduce inflammation and increase blood flow.

To address pain and increase flexibility

Consider doing warm-ups, like arm circles, knee ups before going outside into the cold.

Consider eating foods rich in Vitamin K and Vitamin C.

Dress in several layers before going out doors to allow for a progressive warm-up

The best way to deal with a childhood sports injury is taking strategies to avoid them in the first place. Knowing these strategies can go a long way toward preventing injuries. Common reasons why our kids are getting injured by playing sports:

not training properly

not maintain flexibility

rapid growth during puberty

Types of Injuries

Back & Neck Injuries:

Head and neck injuries can occur often in athletes who perform in contact sports. Often we see our young patients, who have experiencing an impact injury while playing football, rugby, basketball, or a falling accident from events like, horse back riding and gymnastics. Neck injuries often include sprains, strains, and whiplash. We often see back injuries in our youth population commonly in contact sports like, football, ice hockey, weight lifting, rowing, lacross, figure skating and dancing.

Hand and Wrist Injuries:

Hands fingers and wrist injuries are common in sporting events where a fall has occurred.

Feet and Ankle Injuries:

Feet and ankles are particularly vulnerable in sports that involve a lot of running. Increased susceptibility of injury can occur where that youth has flat feet or high arches.

How to prevent Re-injury:

As you rest, and build back up your activity level to pre-injury, sports massage is incredibly helpful to help maximize healing and recovery. Your clinical massage therapist can treat structural imbalances and repetitive motor patterns that may influence performance and re-injury.
